How's Your Lent Going?

It occurred to me that we don't get much chance to talk personal experiences of aspects of our faith. So here's the start of a conversation: how's your lent going?

I'll go first by sharing, in reality television style, the things that are happening in the Croft household this Lent.

We've given up telly.

For those of you who actually like reality television, particularly Big Brother, it might help to read this next paragraph in a voice that's something like Tony Ballantyne impersonating Cheryl Cole:

'Val and Steve have left the lounge to go in the dining room because Matthew wants to watch re-runs of Friends on E4'

And that simple sentence sums up one of the challenges of denying ourselves television this Lent: our house is arranged around the telly. We quickly discovered that the most comfortable places in our house are purposefully organised for television viewing, not so much Feng Shui as Feng TV. All the armchairs and sofas are organised to make sure you are all looking into one corner of the room, rather than to give each person in the room eye-contact with each other.

So, what else have we discovered on our TV-free journey, so far?

Ordinarily we don't intelligently choose what we want to watch - we make a selection from the choices available at the time allotted for TV viewing, you know the sort of thing: you sit down at nine and see what's on, then watch something
Evenings are longer than you think. We have more time for reading, baking, writing and talking about our day
Actually, there is not much to miss on TV. Generally there is better quality news and comment to be read elsewhere, or listened to on the radio
There is very good entertainment on the radio - and listening to that, or music, seems much more of a shared experience somehow

Our time of self-denial doesn't really seem that much of a trial - more of a time of relearning, re-evaluating and discovering new things about ourselves. The real test will come at the end of Lent. Will we be tempted to flop back in front of the telly on Easter Monday and watch a film we wouldn't otherwise of chosen? Hope not.

How many of us tut at the inordinate amount of time we see wasted on Facebook? Increasingly though the world of on-line media is changing to become more rooted in what some of us would prefer to call the real world.

Take the growth of hyper-local new sites. As print journalism struggles to survive, newer smaller community-driven news sources are springing up. Here are two most relevant to us (click the links to go to the sites):

The beauty of these on-line local sites is that much of the news comes from the people living in communities they cover. If you know something you think is interesting or important to other people in our area let the Saddleworth News team know - you'll get a credit for the story.

The real world is catching on that increasingly we have on-line lives as well as the day-to-day physical world we inhabit. The two worlds increasingly overlap as we learn to use on-line media as a tool to help, rather than something to be, at worst, terrified of, and at best, something seem as trivial and 'for the kids'.

The more we share our on-line lives as a church the more our sense of community grows - how many of us are friends on Facebook, or follow each other on Twitter I wonder?

So, I'll start, (I confess I'm not a lover of Facebook so don't expect me to play Farmville with you) I use Twitter - I'm @Crofty, my two blogs are here and here

All Souls - Remembrance

This weekend there was a wealth of death related activity, most of it the ghoulish scare fest type.

But beyond giggling witches begging tricks or treats Autumn also brings another centuries old tradition - the festival of All Souls.

Unlike Halloween, All Souls doesn't portray death as unreal or scary but rather an inevitable part of life's cycle that will affect us all sooner or later.

Our own simple moving act of remembrance at St John the Baptist, focused on the expression of continuing life - the love that helps life go on after our world comes crashing down around our ears when someone we love dies .

I saw awkward gestures from men facing the need to express love physically to a parent - the reaching of a hand, or just a shared look; and I saw children instinctively understanding the rightness of offering simple comfort - a girl of seven or eight trying to stretch her small arms wide enough to reach around her weeping Grandma.

What I took away from the service most of all though was the simple realisation that this final element of life, hard though it is to bear, is a shared one.

In our own packed church I was surprised how many families I knew as neighbours or nodding acquaintances, but who I hadn't realised had been touched by loss. This is a cultural tradition to do with death that reflects its natural place in life - though tough to deal with - rather than the unreal and horrific depictions of Halloween.

Curry Night

On Saturday we held a curry night in the Church Hall. The excellent curry from a local restaurant was accompanied by slides from India with Indian music. After we had eaten we were entertained by one of Father Richard's super slide shows with commentary, so athough he was in Madagascar on holiday he was with us in spirit. True to the theme of the evening the slide show was of Father Richard's trip to Rajastan. There was a good number of people for the event as can be seen, with additional enertainment for the younger people. Many thanks to those who organised the event and to those who came. A thouroughly enjoyable evening of fellowship that also raised some money for the vestry roof fund.

Ride and Stride

The Ride and Stride on on Saturday 12th September was a great success, raising well over £100 for the Greater Manchester Churches Preservation Society and St John's Church.

You can see the intrepid riders here about to set off on the epic journey on the morning of a treacherously warm and sunny September day.

The Church itself was open to Riders and Striders from other Churches and visitors included runners, cyclists and even a horse.

Thanks to everyone who helped out, whether walking, riding or serving refreshments in Church. The event was a great success, we hope to see even more people next year!

Joining us from today is Jackie Calow who is an ordinand. She is a student training for the ministry on the local part time course. She is married with two teenage children and lives in Shaw, where she will continue to live. Jackie is not a curate yet, so she is not ordained nevertheless she will be able to share in some aspects of worship and ministry. All that she experiences amongst us will be an important part of her formation for ministry – we hope that what Jackie learns here will be part of a firm foundation for her future ministry once she is ordained as a curate in the summer of 2011. We welcome Jackie with open hearts. She is seen here in front of the board to welcome all visitors that the young people at St John's have been working on over the summer.

New Team Vicar

For those who were not in church today it was announced that the Revd Paul Monk has accepted the appointment of Assistant curate Team Vicar designate in the Medlock Head Team. He is married with a wife (Jo) and daughter (Mary) and in due course they will move into the Barnabas Vicarage. He will be licensed at Holy Trinity Waterhead on 28 October. Paul is currently the curate at Oldham Parish Church. We look forward to welcoming him and his family.

Susan's Licensing at St Margaret's Heywood

Last night Susan was licensed into her new post Ministering to two Churches in Heywood and Heap Bridge.

In a moving service Bishop Mark, assisted by Archdeacon Cherry, installed Susan in her new post. There was a good turn out of Susan's friends from the Medlock Head Team and in particular from St John's.

Susan looked entirely happy in her new surroundings and the absense of a microphone in the compact Church brought out new strength in her voice, Susan said it must be the Spirit working through her.

At the end of the service Susan was introduced to members of the local Christian Community including Priests, lay Readers and Ministers by Susan's new Area Dean. In the picture with Susan are Bishop Mark, Archdeacon Cherry, the Area Dean and the Church Wardens from the two Churches

Today Enid and Jim who were not able to come to St John's last week, were confirmed by Bishop Stephen of Hulme at St Chad's Church, in the Benefice of Saddleworth. Bishop Stephen is famous for ensuring everyone remembers their Baptismal promises by liberally dousing the entire congregation with Baptismal water.

It is certain that Enid and Jim had a memorable experience, with Enid being asked to bring the wine to the Altar as the Confirmation was combined with first Communion. Father Richard is as proud as ever.

There were friends, relatives and representatives from the parishes present to witness this momentous time in the lives of the newly confirmed Christians.

It was a moving service for all present and was highlighted by the prayers of intercession being led by a number of the confirmation candidates

Around the World in 80 Slides

Last night we were entertained by a series of slide shows accompanied by Cheese and Wine. Father Richard presented two shows, the first was a return to Oman where he saw active service with the Royal Artillery. He showed us pictures of himself and Oman in 1972 and then where he had tried to re-visit those same locations. The second show was a holiday in Vietnam where we were taken to the locations whose names reverberated in the memories of many of us.

The last show of the evening was presented by myself and was a memory of the the Pilgrimage Edna and I undertook in late 2007, visiting many of the holy places in Israel and culminating in walking the Via Dolorosa.

With 40 people present there was a really good atmosphere at the show with a mixture of all ages and good fellowship. Many thanks to Julie and Sarah for organising the event, maybe there will be another next year?

Trains, Good Company and Good Food, Oh Alright Then, Some Beer Too

No matter how we promoted the railway trip to Dewsbury as a trainspotter's delight, we never got over that suspicion, in the minds of some of the St John's congregation, that this was little more than a thinly disguised bar crawl.

It would be disingenuous to say that there were no bars involved - indeed each destination along the way had a bar recommended by CAMRA no less. But still, beer wasn't the primary motive, there were other motives too - like loco - motives...sorry.

The new Deanery of Oldham East was launched today at a service in St James East Crompton. In the picture are the new Area Dean Revd Alan Butler, Bishop Mark, Archdeacon Cherry and the Lay Chair of the Deanery Synod Mr Geoff Dent. People from each of the Parishes in the Area were represented and we were entertained by the good people of St James Church with refreshments afterwards in the church hall.

It was announced in Church on Sunday 24th May by Bishop Mark that Susan is to leave us at the end of June to take up an appointment as a Team Vicar within the Heywood Team.

She will have special responsibility for St Margaret, Heywood and St George, Heap Bridge. After a Team reorganisation she will become Priest in Charge of a new Benefice of St Margaret with St George.

Susan’s last Sunday at Holy Trinity will be 21 June.

There will be a combined service for St John & St Barnabas here at Hey on Sunday 28 June

followed by a faith brunch / lunch.

We have a provisional date for her licensing at St Margaret’s on 22nd July – details later.

We congratulate Susan on her appointment and wish her, Allan and Jonathan well.

An evening viewing the trains and architecture at three stations: Stalybridge, Huddersfield and Dewsbury. Apparently there are also three excellent real ale pubs at the stations mentioned.

We meet at 4-5pm in the bar at Stalybridge, aiming to set off at 5pm.

The return ticket is around £10, you can get a good meal in the pub at Huddersfield station for about £6 if you are interested.
